Imagine this: you come home after a long day, plug your car in, and instead of just charging, it powers your house! This way, it reduces your energy bill while also helping stabilize the grid during a time of day where energy demand is usually quite high.
This isn't some distand future. It's happening right now with Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) technology.
The future of energy is in your driveway
At SurplusMap, we don't just believe in electrification. For it to truly make an impact on peoples lives - let alone the planet - we need to make it smarter and more efficient. That is why we're proud to be part of an exciting new research and pilot project in Oslo alongside Rejlers and CICERO. The project? Exploring how EVs can become a real asset to homes, businessen and the entire power grid!
Why V2X is a big deal (and why it's not that simple)
If you live in Norway, or anywhere with a booming EV market, you've probably noticed the shift. With over 90% of new cars being EVs in Norway, transforming the challenge and increased power demand into opportunities is super interesting! Why? Because they're quite litterally batteries on wheels! They can:
Reduce energy costs fro homes and businesses
Support the grid by balancing demand and supply
Make renewable energy more reliable
But - with great opportunities, comes also challenges. Not every neighbourhood, home or business is ready for V2X. They either don't have the right grid capacity to handle two-way power flows, don't have the right incentives or price models in place or the lack of EVs simply doesn't make bidirectional charging viable.
This is where smart data and predicitive insights become critical!
SurplusMap is making the green shift smarter
Our vision is to enable a smarter and more sustainable world by optimizing the green energy supply and demand. And every day we strive to obtain this by leveraging science, data and geospatial intelligence to help businesses, cities and energy companies to deploy EV charging infrastructure in the right place, at the right time, for the biggest impact.
For instance - in this project together with Rejlers and CICERO, we're tackling some of the biggest questions:
Where should V2X chargers go first? SurplusMap analyzes real-world data to identify the best locations, meaning places where EV adoption, energy prices and grid capacity - aligns.
How will this impact the power grid? Our AI-powered models help predict energy flows, so utilities can prepare for and balance the added load and benefits of bidirectional charging.
What's the business case? We're helping design smarter pricing models and revenue streams, ensuring that businesses, cities and households see real benefits from V2X.
After all - we’re here to make the green shift scalable, practical, and beneficial for everyone. Not just in theory, but in the real world!
